Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Cusco & Free Afternoon
Your private transfer will meet you at Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport and escort you to your hotel in Cusco. Take the afternoon at your leisure to wander the Plaza de Armas or simply relax and acclimatize to the altitude.
At 6 pm, join your guide at our headquarters for an orientation and Inca Trail briefing—this is also your opportunity to complete check-in and settle any final details.
Day 2: Sacred Valley of the Incas
At 8 am, depart from your hotel and wind through the Andean highlands to El Mirador, a spectacular overlook of the Sacred Valley. Here your guide will introduce you to the valley’s geological and cultural significance.
Next, explore the terraced ruins of Pisac, admiring the Inca stonework and irrigation channels. Descend afterward to the bustling Pisac artisan market, where you can browse textiles and handicrafts before enjoying an optional lunch at a local Andean restaurant.
In the afternoon, continue along the Urubamba River to Ollantaytambo and tour its fortress, famed for its sunken plazas and towering stone walls. Overnight in Ollantaytambo to prepare for your trek.
Day 3: Cusco – Km 82 – Patallacta – Ayapata
Pick-ups begin between 4:00 am and 7:00 am depending on your lodging. After a cooked breakfast and porter introductions at the Porter House, drive to Kilometer 82 and present your passport at the trailhead checkpoint.
Follow the trail for about two hours to Patallacta, an Inca gateway settlement. Continue trekking after lunch through two small Quechua communities, where you can purchase any last-minute snacks or batteries.
Arrive at the campsite in Ayapata (11,000 ft/3,350 m) by late afternoon. Settle in with a hot drink and snack, then enjoy dinner prepared by your expedition chef.
Day 4: Dead Woman’s Pass – Runcuraccay – Chaquicocha
Rise early with coca tea and begin the 4-hour ascent to Dead Woman’s Pass (13,825 ft/4,215 m). Pause at the summit for panoramic mountain views before descending into the hidden Pacaymayu Valley for lunch.
In the afternoon, tackle the climb to Runcuraccay Pass and explore the small Inca ruin there. From that vantage point, spot two cascading waterfalls before descending to Sayacmarca, an otherwise inaccessible village nestled on the mountainside.
Continue another hour to camp beside Chaquicocha Lake (11,800 ft/3,600 m). After dinner, weather permitting, enjoy stargazing and learn about the Inca constellations in the clear Southern Hemisphere sky.
Day 5: Cloud Forest Trek to Wiñay Wayna
After breakfast at 6:30 am, trek along the gentle “Inca flats” and enter the lush cloud forest alive with orchids and hummingbirds. Ascend to Phuyupatamarka (“Town in the Clouds”) at 11,800 ft/3,600 m, then descend past the agricultural terraces of Intipata.
Arrive at the Wiñay Wayna campsite around 1 pm. After lunch and rest, your guide will lead an interpretive tour of the ruins, culminating in a late-day ceremony to honor your porter team—an Inca Trail tradition.
Day 6: Sun Gate & Machu Picchu Guided Tour
Wake at 3:30 am for breakfast, then set off to Inti Punku (Sun Gate), arriving at sunrise for unobstructed views of Machu Picchu. Descend to the citadel by 7:40 am for a two-hour private guided exploration of the Lost City of the Incas.
After your tour, take the shuttle bus down to Aguas Calientes, where you have free time or may choose to climb Huayna Picchu (advance permit required). In the afternoon, board the Expedition class train back to Ollantaytambo or Poroy, then transfer by bus to your hotel in Cusco.
Day 7: Rainbow Mountain & Red Valley
A 4 am pickup brings you to Phulawasipata for a field-cooked breakfast. Hike to the vibrant stripes of Rainbow Mountain (16,730 ft/5,100 m), learning about its unique mineralogy and local Q’ero traditions.
Rather than retracing the same route, continue along a ridge to the Red Valley, whose iron-rich slopes glow at sunset. Enjoy a fresh mountain lunch before returning to Cusco by early evening.
Day 8: Scenic Bus to Puno
Board a comfortable tourist coach at 6 am. En route, visit the “Sistine Chapel of the Andes” at Andahuaylillas and the grand temple ruins of Raqchi. Pause at Pukara to admire pre-Inca ceramics before arriving in Puno.
Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel for a brief orientation with our local representative.
Day 9: Uros & Amantani Homestay
Pick-up is between 7:30 am and 8 am. Cross Lake Titicaca to the floating Uros islands, explore reed-built homes, then continue to Amantani Island for a homestay with a local family.
Tonight’s accommodation is simple but memorable, offering insight into island life. In the afternoon, hike up to Pachamama Hill to watch sunset and share an evening celebration with your hosts.
Day 10: Taquile Island & Return to Puno
Enjoy breakfast with your host family before boarding a boat to Taquile Island. Learn about the UNESCO-recognized weaving cooperative and stroll scenic trails overlooking the lake.
Return to Puno by mid-afternoon. The rest of the day is yours to relax, explore the town, or prepare for your departure.
Day 11: Departure & Farewell
After breakfast, a private transfer will take you to Juliaca Airport for your flight to Lima. Upon arrival in Lima, enjoy a brief city transfer if desired or proceed to Jorge Chávez International Airport for your onward journey.

- Flights: Flying to Cusco can be tricky. Delays occur often and it is not uncommon for flights to be cancelled. Please be sure to arrive in the city at least two days before your trek start date. Group Tours
Group tours may include people with varying hiking abilities and ages. When joining one of these tours, be prepared for the group’s pace to vary, as some participants may move faster or slower than you. Everyone can walk at their own pace, and the guide will work to ensure that everyone enjoys the experience. The groups may request some modifications to the itinerary, and the guide will make the best decisions to ensure everyone’s comfort.
Strikes and Protests
Unfortunately, strikes are common in Peru and can disrupt tour itineraries. Protests may block roads or halt trains. In the event that these issues arise, we will ensure that your itinerary continues as planned, even if this means departing earlier than expected. If it becomes necessary to cancel any tour, our operations team will contact you to coordinate the best possible solutions. The safety of our clients is always our priority.
Lost Items
You are responsible for your belongings throughout the journey. We recommend that you pay attention to where you leave your items and make sure to collect everything from our vans, camps, or restaurants. Do not leave your belongings unattended, as it is possible that other travelers may pick them up without knowing who they belong to.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is an affordable and highly recommended option. Although trips are planned months in advance, there is always the possibility of unforeseen events.
Adventure travel carries a higher risk, so having adequate insurance will protect your investment. If you wish, we can help you contact an insurance agent who can advise you on the proper coverage.
First Aid
Every guide from Travels to Machu Picchu has been trained in first aid by medical professionals. We conduct annual training sessions to stay updated and prepared for any emergency. During the tour, each guide carries a first aid kit with basic medications, such as those for traveler’s diarrhea, as well as oxygen.
If you ever feel that you cannot continue the trek, our guides will know the safest and quickest way to get you to a place where you can receive medical attention. We will never leave you alone; there will always be a team member who will accompany you until you are in the hands of a doctor. If necessary, we will ensure that you can visit Machu Picchu at a later time and rejoin your group.
Environmental Impact
At Travels to Machu Picchu, we are committed to respecting the environment. We use biodegradable soap and take care of transporting all our trash back to Cusco. Our porters are trained to take care of the trails and collect any waste they may find from other groups. Additionally, we use eco-friendly portable toilets, which allow us to pack up waste and leave no trace in the natural surroundings.
